ASUS F55A-ES01The ASUS F55A-ES01 is a 15.6 inch laptop from ASUS that is aimed squarely at the budget-conscious in the market. When it was first released, it retailed for $399, but it is now available for a cut-price $249. 99. As expected and since you’d barely find another 15 incher in a similar price range, the specs are very dull with an Intel Celeron B830 processor clocking in at 1.8GHz starting this party. Also limping in are 2GB of RAM (at least its DDR3) and a 320GB hard disk.

The graphics card is an Intel GMA HD, and at an inch thick, weighing 5.8 lbs the F55A is portable for a laptop with such a large screen. However it does feature Windows 8, so do make sure you’re comfortable with the OS before purchasing this. Well, thats the outline of the ASUS F55A – its not going to blow your socks off in any department, but if what you want is a simple, solid product with a big screen – this one falls into your purview. Lets check out what else its got going for and against it.

The Pros – ASUS F55A-ES01 15.6″ Laptop

Price; The single biggest advantage that this laptop has going for it is the ridiculously low price tag for a 15-inch machine. As we’ve mentioned, the functionality is basic but adequate. If your fine with Windows 8, the ASUS F551-ES01 is damn easy on the wallet.

Connectivity – Bluetooth 4 and a USB 3.0; The ASUS F55A, surprisingly, for a laptop with a sub-$250 price tag features both Bluetooth 4.0 and the later version USB 3.0. Those are great features to have and are that something extra to please the buyer.

Quite portable for its size; For a 15.6 inch screen, this laptop weighs in at a modest 5.8 lbs and is only an inch thick. This makes it quite easy to move around and quite a few users have made note of this aspect.

The Cons – ASUS F55A-ES01 15.6″ Laptop

Basic computing; Not really a con, since this is exactly the aim of this laptop. We still thought to reinforce the fact that the F55A is suitable only for browsing, webcam chatting, emailing, listening to music, watching movies and basic gaming. The webcam on this thing is only 0.3MP with a 640 x 480 resolution.

Cheapish Build; The F55A is made of cheap plastic, and gives quite easily on the areas near the touchpad. The open lid feels a bit flimsy to the touch as well.

Windows 8; This operating system works much better with touchscreens and lots of users have reported a lack of sympathy for the new direction Windows has taken with this thing. It’s a 50-50 strike rate, so we’d recommend going out and testing the feel of Windows 8 before buying this laptop, if you aren’t already familiar with it.

Bottom Line – ASUS F55A-ES01 15.6″ Laptop

The ASUS F55A is what it is. And that is a cheap, no frills laptop that gets the (basic) job done. Most users who buy this product love it, since it fulfils all their music, movie-watching, and basic browsing needs without any hassles. A few glitches with the thing are the presence of Windows 8 that takes some getting used to, and a slightly cheapish feel to the laptop. But we’re more than happy to take these in our stride at an offer price of under $250.

This one’s a steal if you know what its good for.
